The four principals were perfectly cast and delivered their lines effectively, clearly and at perfect volume. I really believed Kayla Ciudad was Maggie - sassy, sensitive; and that Adam Kinkaid (Paul) a bit pompous and preachy were actual members of 12 step programs.
Drew Davis-Wheeler was definitely a “street-cred” gansta---savy and buff-bodied.
It was Rachel Little (Boochie) who stole the most laughs with her spot-on portrayal of a bit dim-witted, very sexy, very bored lady of the streets.
Guirgis’ dialogue left no doubt of what the play was about, where it was going, and how it ended. There were 2 cleverly spare. attractive sets.
The first act was quick, witty and contained everything to ensure clarity and direction. The second act at Big Tuna’s Mansion introduced the Tunas (son and father) and nephew Sal.
Little Tuna tended to yell at times when he could have perhaps conveyed his in-charge/boss role with strong voice and body-language.
Accents are tricky--and Sal was at times hard to understand. Here again, maybe Sal could have more effectively conveyed his Italian/New York heritage by choosing a few words to carry through consistently.
Stardust Playhouse is charming. Clean, decorated imaginatively, and perfect venue for edgy theater. Attention to detail abounds and you might be surprised to admire ticket booth and cigarette-girl!
*there are 2 Denny’s in Monterey on Fremont. Stardust is in NORTH Monterey. Limited parking in their lot.
